Kruger or Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park?
The two parks side by side on what you will see, what you can do, what it costs, how you get there and the health picture, with the facts behind every rating.
Our verdict
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and Kruger are both South African self-drive parks with guided walks and wilderness trails, so the choice is mostly about scale and where you fly in. Pick Hluhluwe-iMfolozi for a compact, hilly park reached from Durban up the N2, with elephant, buffalo and nyala likely, lion a chance and wild dog a realistic hope, and for the iMfolozi wilderness trails, several nights on foot in an area no vehicle may enter. Its roads are mostly gravel and only Mpila runs a night drive. Pick Kruger for range and surer sightings: tar to all nine gates, elephant guaranteed and lion likely, night drives from the main camps and flights to Skukuza inside the park. Both lie in South Africa's malaria areas from September to May, though advice for Hluhluwe-iMfolozi's district is split between bite avoidance and tablets. Neither sells a boat trip.

4Armed guides lead morning walks from most main camps at R726 (2024/25 tariff), with no under-12s, and base-camp and backpacking wilderness trails reach the 49% of the park zoned as wilderness; walking on your own is not allowed. | 5bestGuided walks leave Hilltop and Mpila for up to eight people aged 12 and over, and the iMfolozi wilderness trails spend two to four nights on foot in an area no vehicle may enter, including a Primitive Trail where you carry your pack and sleep out.
3bestSANParks sells guided night drives from the main camps at R324 (2024/25 tariff) and the concession lodges run their own, but self-drivers must be in camp by gate closing, so nothing happens after dark in your own car. | 2Only Mpila lists a night drive, Monday to Saturday at 18:00 and Sunday at 17:00; nobody may drive in the park after gate closing without an escort.
1Neither boat trips nor balloon flights appear on SANParks' list of Kruger activities; the water on offer is a guided river walk at Olifants, the hides and dam stops such as Sunset Dam for hippo and crocodile. | 1Ezemvelo's tariff lists no boat trip, and a Hluhluwe Dam cruise mentioned on its 2026 website is unconfirmed; the guide advises against wading or swimming because of bilharzia, crocodiles and hippos.
5bestTar to all nine gates and tar or good gravel inside, so an ordinary car covers every public road, with car hire at KMIA, Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa and Skukuza; the catch is 50 km/h on tar and no driving after gate closing. | 4All roads to the three gates are tarred and an ordinary car manages the tar spine and main gravel loops in dry weather, but the rest of the roughly 229 km is gravel, low-level crossings flooded in February 2025 and car hire near the park is difficult.

4bestFirst aid at every main camp, an emergency centre at Skukuza, camp fences and pools, and lodges such as Rhino Post (any age) and Lukimbi and Singita Sweni (from 2); but NaTHNaC advises antimalarials from September to May and walks exclude under-12s. | 3Game drives take children from three, Hilltop's 4-bed chalets suit a family and children pay half the conservation fee, but walks start at 12, Mpila is unfenced, the CDC recommends tablets for the district and the guide names no nearby hospital.
5bestElephant, hippo, impala and zebra are guaranteed and buffalo, giraffe and lion likely on a three-night dry-season stay, and Airlink flies from Johannesburg to Skukuza, inside the park, twice a day. | 4On a two or three day self-drive elephant, buffalo, giraffe, nyala and impala are likely and lion and wild dog a chance, 2.6 hours on tar from Durban's airport, though leopard and cheetah are luck in the thick bush.
349% of the park is zoned as wilderness and the mopane north has fewer cars, but the south has the highest density of game and of cars, and day-visitor gate quotas apply in the school holidays. | 3The iMfolozi Wilderness Area, about 25,000 ha, has no roads and no vehicles, but the rest of the park is a public road network with the R618 running through its corridor, and the camps fill in the school holidays. |

How the ratings work
- Big game is calculated from each park's sightings table on its wildlife page: guaranteed counts 3, likely 2, a fair chance 1, rare 0.5 and absent 0, across elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, cheetah, hippo and giraffe, scaled so that 16 points is 5 out of 5.
- Birding follows the species count on the wildlife page. Low-budget safari follows the cheapest listed bed, the share of budget places and the daily park fee.
- Walking, night drives, water, self-drive, families, first safari and wilderness are our ratings, whole numbers from 1 to 5. Press "Why?" on any row to read the facts each one rests on, with the page they come from. Where a rule is not published we say so rather than guess.
- Prices are per person per night in US dollars as listed on the lodges pages, before park fees; the three-night totals come from each park's costs page and use the dated rates there. Fees are the international adult rate per day.
