Month by month
Kruger in October
October is the month of the turn. The first weeks still hold the dry-season concentrations at the water, then the first storms arrive and the bush starts to green. It is hot, and once the school holiday ends, quiet.
If you only want the answer
October is good if you can take the heat. Expect about 44 mm of rain over 5 days at the park centre, highs of 30.3°C and nights of 18.1°C, with real days often hotter. Early October gives some of the best balance of game, heat and crowds in the year. Gates open at 05:30 again, the Lebombo 4x4 trail makes its last run, and SANParks' tariff year ends on 31 October.
October weather: the hottest dry days and the first rain
The normals give October about 44 mm of rain over around 5 days at the park centre, with afternoons of 30.3°C and nights of 18.1°C. Skukuza averages seven rainy days, as the first storms build. Heat is the bigger story: October to December has the most days at or above 35°C, and the Skukuza station has recorded 43.6°C in October.
The first half of the month still has the dry-season concentrations at the rivers and dams. After the first good rain the pans start to fill and the animals begin to spread out, so early October is the safer bet for game.
Last runs of the season
Several seasonal products end in October. The Lebombo Eco Trail, the guided 4x4 route along the eastern boundary, makes its last departure on the last Sunday of the month. The walking camps of the far north (Hutwini and Nkula in the Makuleke area) close their season, which runs from April to October.
From 1 October the gates open earlier, at 05:30 for both entrance and camp gates, and close at 18:00. The Giriyondo crossing to Mozambique moves to summer hours, 08:00 to 16:00.
Fees, rates and crowds in October
SANParks' tariff year ends on 31 October. The conservation fee for international adults is R602 per day until then; SANParks has published a new fee sheet from 1 November 2026, reported at R692, so trips that run across the month end pay two different rates. Singita Lebombo stays on its shoulder rate of R56,310 per adult until 31 October.
The spring school holidays end on 5 October in 2026 (4 October in 2027), after which the park is quiet. Malaria tablets are recommended, as in every month from September to May.
