Month by month

Kruger in July

July is Kruger's driest and coldest month. The game is concentrated at the rivers and dams, and so, until about 20 July, are South African families on their winter school holiday.

If you only want the answer

July is prime for game and the driest month of the year: about 4 mm of rain at the park centre, highs of 24.3°C and a model night low of 12.0°C, with real dawns around 6°C at Skukuza. Malaria risk is very low. The winter school holidays fill the southern camps until about 20 July, so book early or head north.

July weather: the driest and coldest month

The normals give July about 4 mm of rain at the park centre, highs of 24.3°C and nights of 12.0°C, the lowest of the year. The real nights are colder: the Skukuza station's July mean minimum is about 6°C, and it has recorded -3.8°C in July. Days are dry and comfortable.

With the pans long dry, the rivers and dams carry the game. River roads such as the Sabie in the south and the viewpoints on the Olifants are where the action concentrates, and the morning drives start at 06:00 when the gates open.

School holidays: busy south, quieter north

The winter school holidays run from 29 June to 20 July in 2026 and from 28 June to 19 July in 2027. The southern camps, closest to Johannesburg, are full, and SANParks may apply day-visitor gate quotas. The northern camps (Letaba, Mopani, Shingwedzi, Punda Maria) are further from Johannesburg and the main airports.

If your dates are flexible, the last week of July, after the holidays end, combines peak-season game with fewer cars. All gates still close at 17:30.

Flood repairs finished in July 2026

Two repair milestones fell in July 2026. The culverts on the H4-1 between Skukuza and Lower Sabie, damaged in the February 2023 floods, were rebuilt by 31 July at a cost of R37.5 million, and the Letaba campsite reopened on 6 July after the January floods. Check SANParks' notifications for any remaining closures.

The top lodges are at peak rates: Singita Lebombo at R60,470 per adult from 1 June to 31 August, Lukimbi at R16,300 in its high season. Malaria risk is very low by NaTHNaC's assessment, with bite avoidance only.
