Month by month
Kruger in February
February is the month the camps empty. The school holidays are over, Easter is weeks away, and you share a hot, green park with the birds, the young impala and very few other cars.
If you only want the answer
February suits visitors who want space and do not mind heat. Expect 52 mm of rain over about 6 days at the park centre, highs of 31.3°C and warm nights of 21.2°C. There are no school holidays, so it is likely the quietest month, but the bush is thick, the game is scattered and floods remain possible: the last big ones before 2026 were in February 2023.
February weather in Kruger: the heat peaks
The model gives February 52 mm of rain over about 6 days at the park centre, with afternoons of 31.3°C and nights of 21.2°C. The south is wetter; Skukuza averages 9.6 rainy days, and its wettest February on record brought 531 mm. February also holds the station's highest reading between 1960 and 2001: 45.6°C. Drive early, rest through the middle of the day, and carry plenty of water.
Game is spread out. Elephants and buffalo drink from full pans far from the roads, the grass is long and the leaves are thick. The rewards are the birds, still in full summer residence, and the impala lambs born from November onwards.
The quietest month, and why that matters
February has no South African school holidays, which in practice makes it the quietest month in the park; SANParks publishes no monthly visitor figures, so treat that as an inference rather than a statistic. You can usually find a camp bed at shorter notice than in any other month, and sightings are less crowded.
The camp gates now open at 05:30 (04:30 in January), entrance gates also at 05:30, and all gates close at 18:30. On 1 February the Lonely Bull backpacking trail from Mopani reopens for the year, with departures on Wednesdays and Sundays until 30 November: four days and three nights, four to eight people, your own tent and food.
Floods, rates and malaria in February
February 2023 brought floods that damaged the H4-1 between Skukuza and Lower Sabie; its culverts were only rebuilt by 31 July 2026. Check SANParks' notifications before you set out and plan on tar roads.
Singita Lebombo stays on its off-peak rate of R51,665 per adult until 30 April, and SANParks' cheaper camp period runs to mid-March. Jock Safari Lodge is the exception, at its highest rate of R19,865 from 1 January to 30 April 2027. Malaria tablets are recommended, as in every month from September to May.
