Month by month

Kruger in January

January is Kruger at its greenest and its most unpredictable. It is the wettest month at the park centre, the Skukuza station's record month is a January, and in 2026 the rivers rose far enough to close fifteen camps.

If you only want the answer

January is for birders, photographers and repeat visitors who accept risk. Expect 87 mm of rain over about 8 days at the park centre, highs of 31.4°C and nights of 21.3°C, thick bush and game spread far from the rivers. The school holidays run to about 12 January; after that the park is quiet, but floods can close roads and camps at short notice.

Kruger weather in January: hot, wet, and sometimes extreme

The thirty-year normals for the middle of the park give January 87 mm of rain over about 8 wet days, afternoons of 31.4°C and nights that hardly cool, at 21.3°C. The south is wetter: the Skukuza weather station has averaged 9.8 rainy days in January since 1912, and its wettest month on record, 835 mm, was a January. Most of the rain arrives as afternoon thunderstorms, so mornings are usually the best time to drive.

For game viewing the arithmetic is unhelpful. The pans are full, the bush is at its densest, and elephants and buffalo no longer need the rivers. What January gives you instead is the full complement of summer birds, including the Wahlberg's, Steppe and Lesser Spotted eagles that SANParks lists as summer visitors, and impala lambs a couple of months old with the predators following them.

The January 2026 floods, and what they mean for your trip

Heavy rain from about 9 to 10 January 2026 flooded large parts of the park. The national environment minister said on 22 January that fifteen camps had closed, some completely cut off by destroyed roads and bridges, that all guests and staff had been evacuated safely, and that gates were closing temporarily. Guest entries from 9 to 19 January fell by 41% on the year before, and a national disaster was declared. Recovery was still running in September 2026.

That was an exceptional year, but not a unique one. If you travel in January, book what you can on flexible terms, keep your fuel tank full, and check SANParks' notifications page in the last few days before you leave. Gravel roads and the 4x4 trails close after heavy rain even in normal years, so plan routes on tar.

Gates, rates and crowds in January

January has the longest driving day of the year: camp gates open at 04:30, entrance gates at 05:30, and all gates close at 18:30. The South African school holidays run until about 12 January (to 12 January in 2027), so the first fortnight is busy and SANParks may apply day-visitor gate quotas. After that the park empties.

Rates move in different directions. Singita Lebombo drops to its off-peak rate of R51,665 per adult on 6 January, while Jock Safari Lodge moves to its highest rate of R19,865 on 1 January 2027 because its seasons follow its tariff year. SANParks' cheaper camp period starts in mid-January. Malaria tablets are recommended: NaTHNaC's transmission season for Kruger runs from September to May.
