Month by month

Kruger in September

September is the other half of Kruger's best pair of months. The game is at its most concentrated, the first migrant birds return, and the month carries two busy spells: National Parks Week and the spring school holidays.

If you only want the answer

September is prime for game, and with August the strongest month of the year. Expect about 12 mm of rain at the park centre, highs of 29.1°C and nights of 16.1°C, with some days reaching 40°C. Big buffalo herds gather at water, European bee-eaters arrive, and the top lodges drop to shoulder rates. NaTHNaC recommends malaria tablets again from September.

September weather: the heat comes back

The normals give September about 12 mm of rain at the park centre over a couple of days, with afternoons of 29.1°C and nights of 16.1°C. The averages hide hot spells: Singita's September 2025 log noted temperatures reaching 40°C on its concession east of Satara, and at Skukuza the reanalysis averages between four and five days at or above 35°C this month.

The dawns are no longer cold, and the midday heat makes the early and late hours of the gate day the best for driving. All gates still open at 06:00 and close at 18:00.

Game and birds in September

Water is at its scarcest and the game at its most concentrated. Singita's September 2025 report described herds of about 700 buffalo around Gudzane Dam and larger herds of up to 2,000. The bush is bare, which helps with everything from leopard to the rare antelope.

The birds start to return before the rain. In 2025 the first European bee-eater flock arrived on 19 September on that same concession, with Wahlberg's eagles and Klaas's cuckoos close behind. September 2026 also saw the start of a year-long cheetah census, running to 31 August 2027, in which visitors' photographs count: if you see a cheetah, send in your pictures.

National Parks Week, Heritage Day and the school holidays

SA National Parks Week gives South Africans free day entry; in 2026 Kruger's free days ran from Monday 7 to Friday 11 September, and the southern gates were busy. Heritage Day on 24 September has brought what SANParks called unprecedented visitor demand, and the spring school holidays follow (24 September to 5 October in 2026, 23 September to 4 October in 2027). Expect gate quotas and full camps.

Singita Lebombo moves to its shoulder rate of R56,310 per adult on 1 September. The malaria transmission season starts again in September, and NaTHNaC recommends atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine from now until May.
