The gateway towns, used properly

Nelspruit and Hazyview before the Kruger: fuel, gates, the drive (2026)

Mbombela, still called Nelspruit by most people and by SANParks, is the capital of Mpumalanga and the city behind Kruger's southern gates. It has the airport, the private hospital, the malls and the car hire. Hazyview, up the R40 beyond White River, is the small town 10 km from Phabeni gate and on the road to Paul Kruger gate.

If you only want the answer

Shop, fill up and collect your hire car in Mbombela, then drive 64 km on the N4 to Malelane gate or go up the R40 to Hazyview, which is 10 km from Phabeni gate and 41 km from Paul Kruger gate (SANParks). You do not need cash for the gate: Kruger's gates and camp receptions run on cards, and the conservation fee of R602 per international adult per day (to 31 October 2026) can be prepaid online. Numbi gate is closer at 52 km, but the UK FCDO says SANParks advises against using it.

Which gate from Nelspruit, and how far?

Five gates are within reach of Mbombela, and SANParks publishes the road distance to each. Malelane on the N4 is our default for the far south, Phabeni and Paul Kruger via Hazyview are the gates for Skukuza and Pretoriuskop, and Crocodile Bridge at Komatipoort is the one for Lower Sabie. Numbi is the nearest, but the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office reports that SANParks advises against using it after a fatal attack on a tourist, and that there have been protests and violent incidents on the R538 approach.

SANParks does not publish drive times from the city, so the table gives distances and what lies beyond each gate. Leave room in the day: the park's own speed limits (50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel) make the gate-to-camp stretch the slow part.

Fuel: fill up in town, but the park has pumps

There are filling stations along the N4 and the R40 through Mbombela, and it makes sense to start with a full tank. Kruger is not a fuel desert, though. SANParks says petrol and diesel are sold at all major camps, and that the park's fuel stations take garage cards, Visa and Mastercard or cash.

The January 2026 floods showed the limit of that promise: Mopani ran short of fuel and had no diesel, and SANParks asked visitors to arrive with fuel in the tank because camp pumps might be affected. If you are heading north beyond Satara, fill up at every main camp you pass rather than running the tank low.

Shops, banks and the last big supermarket

Riverside Mall on Government Boulevard is the one-stop errand run: its own site lists more than 130 stores and banks, open Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 18:00 and Sunday and public holidays 09:00 to 15:00. Buy here what you want for a self-catering stay: the main rest camps have shops, but the bushveld camps have none, and only overnight guests may enter them.

Cash matters less than you might expect. Inside the park the only bank is at Skukuza (Monday to Friday and Saturday morning) and the only ATMs are at Skukuza and Letaba, but the gates and camp receptions take cards. Draw a little rand for tips and small purchases in town and leave the rest on the card.

Paying at the gate: cards, the fee and the indemnity form

Kruger's gates are run as cashless. A Kruger operator puts it plainly: payment is by card, and one transaction per vehicle saves time; whether every one of the nine gates refuses cash in 2026 is not stated on SANParks' own pages, so carry a card that works in South Africa. Every visitor also fills in a gate registration and indemnity form.

What you pay is the daily conservation fee, per person and not per car: R602 per international adult and R300 per child aged 2 to 11 for 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, rising to R692 and R345 from 1 November 2026 on the tariff SANParks has linked. You can prepay it with an online booking. Overnight guests settle it at camp reception on check-in, and the 1% community fund is added to accommodation and activities.

SANParks has no office in Nelspruit

We found no SANParks reservation office in Mbombela. Bookings go through SANParks Online Bookings, Central Reservations on +27 (0)12 428 9111, or the head office counter in Groenkloof, Pretoria. Once you are in the park, the Kruger administration office at Skukuza is on +27 (0)13 735 4000 and the Kruger emergency call centre, which handles medical, mechanical and law-enforcement calls anywhere in the park, is on +27 (0)13 735 4325.

Book before you drive out. SANParks opens accommodation 11 months ahead, and over public holidays and long weekends it applies day-visitor quotas: once a gate's quota is reached, only guests with booked overnight accommodation get in.

Hospital and pharmacy

Mediclinic Nelspruit, at 1 Louise Street, Sonheuwel, is the main private hospital behind the southern gates: Mediclinic says it serves an area from Belfast to Hoedspruit, Eswatini and Maputo. Its emergency department is on +27 13 759 0645 and the main switchboard on 013 759 0500. It is 52 to 125 km from the southern gates. Stock up on anything you take regularly before you drive in, because the camps have first-aid centres and no pharmacy is listed inside the park.

Car hire and getting to town without a car

Car hire is at KMIA, 22 km from the city towards White River, and SANParks also lists car hire at Skukuza camp. A private shuttle runs from KMIA into the park in about 1 hour 20 minutes. Coaches reach Mbombela from Johannesburg: an aggregator listed seven operators and about 18 departures a day in October 2026, with a fastest time of 3 hours 40 minutes. There is no public bus into the park itself.

Hazyview: the town at the gates

Hazyview is the second gateway, and for Skukuza it is the better one. SANParks puts it 10 km from Phabeni gate and 41 km from Paul Kruger gate on the R536, and it is the usual base for the open-safari-vehicle day trips into the south. If you could not get a bed inside the park, this is where to sleep and drive in each morning, paying the conservation fee on each entry.

Three places to stay on the doorstep publish details. Rissington Inn says it is a 10-minute drive from Phabeni gate. Kruger Park Lodge, a Legacy Hotels chalet resort in Hazyview (outside the park, despite the name), lists two-bedroom chalets for up to four from R3,950 a night, self-catering (own site, 6 October 2026). Kruger Gate Hotel, formerly Protea Hotel Kruger Gate, sits less than a minute from Paul Kruger gate on the Sabie River and sells dinner, bed and breakfast. We have not checked Hazyview's shops and filling stations ourselves; for a full shop, do it in Mbombela.

Skukuza: the gateway inside the park

Once through the gate, Skukuza does what a town does. SANParks lists a post office, an FNB bank facility, car hire, a restaurant, deli and shop, a laundromat, a filling station, a garage with a workshop, basic first aid and cellphone reception. For a breakdown anywhere in the park, call the Vuswa roadside assistance line on 0800 030 666 or the emergency call centre, which SANParks says will help even with a flat tyre.

The other gateway towns, in one line each

  • Malelane and Komatipoort, on the N4: for Malelane and Crocodile Bridge gates; Komatipoort also leads to the Lebombo border post into Mozambique.
  • Hoedspruit: Eastgate airport, 68 km from Orpen gate and 74 km from Phalaborwa gate.
  • Phalaborwa: town and airport 3 km from Phalaborwa gate; Clinix Phalaborwa Private Hospital (86 Grosvenor Crescent, +27 (0)15 101 3000) is the hospital SANParks lists for Kruger, and Sefapane Lodge is 1 km from the gate.

The checklist for the morning you drive in

  • Check SANParks' Kruger notifications page for closed gates, roads and camps
  • Leave Mbombela early: entrance gates open at 05:30 from October to March and 06:00 from April to September
  • Know your closing time: 17:30 from May to July, up to 18:30 from November to February, and you must be in camp by then
  • A bank card that works in South Africa for the gate, the camps and fuel
  • Your booking confirmation, and passports for the international rate
  • Drinking water and snacks for the drive: the gate-to-camp leg can take hours
  • Antimalarials if you travel from September to May, as NaTHNaC advises for Kruger
  • No pets, no drones, no motorcycles: all banned in the park
