Roads, gates and airports

How to get to Kruger National Park: roads, gates and transfers

Kruger is a self-drive park with tar to every one of its nine gates. From Johannesburg the drive is 411 to 600 km depending on the gate, and most international visitors fly to an airport on the park's edge and hire a car there.

If you only want the answer

Drive the N4 east from Johannesburg: Malelane gate is 428 km and 4 to 5 hours away, Paul Kruger gate 460 km and 5 to 6 hours, on tar all the way (SANParks figures, 2026). An ordinary car is enough for every public road in the park, and no 4x4 is needed. If you fly, land at Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMIA), Skukuza, Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa and hire a car at the airport.

How long is the drive from Johannesburg to Kruger?

Four to seven hours, depending on which of the nine gates you aim for. SANParks puts Numbi gate at 411 km from Johannesburg, Malelane at 428 km, Phabeni at 430 km, Paul Kruger at 460 km and Crocodile Bridge at 475 km; all five are reached along the N4 through eMalahleni (Witbank) and Mbombela (Nelspruit). The central and northern gates are further: Orpen and Phalaborwa 490 km each, Punda Maria 550 km and Pafuri 600 km, reached on the N1 north for the last three.

Pick the gate by the camp you have booked, not by the shortest road. Paul Kruger gate is 12 km from Skukuza, Malelane gate 12 km from Berg-en-Dal, Crocodile Bridge gate sits beside its own camp, and Orpen gate is 48 km from Satara. Inside the park the drive slows sharply: SANParks recommends an average of 30 km/h, so the last stretch from gate to camp often takes longer than its distance suggests.

Distances and drive times to each gate

The table carries SANParks' own distances and times from its Entrance Gates, Distances & Directions and Travel Times pages, read in October 2026. SANParks calls its in-park times approximate minimums at legal speed limits, so add time for stops.

Which gate should you use from Nelspruit?

Use Malelane on the N4 (64 km) for Berg-en-Dal and the far south, or Phabeni and Paul Kruger via Hazyview for Pretoriuskop and Skukuza. Numbi is the closest gate to the city at 52 km, but the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says SANParks advises against using it after a fatal attack on a tourist, and reports protests and violent incidents on the R538 approach road (FCDO, checked October 2026). SANParks has also closed Numbi, Phabeni and Paul Kruger at times during protests on the R40 in Hazyview.

Check SANParks' notifications page on the morning you drive, and drive the approach roads in daylight. The FCDO warns that thieves break car windows at junctions and that carjacking is common after dark, so keep bags out of sight.

Do you need a 4x4 for Kruger?

No. SANParks says the national access roads to all entrance gates are tarred, and that the tourist roads inside are either tar or good gravel, so an ordinary saloon car covers the whole public network. A 4x4 matters only for the guided 4x4 eco-trails and for crossing into Mozambique's Limpopo National Park, where most roads need high clearance.

The rules are strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel and 20 km/h in the camps. Motorcycles are banned, as are vehicles with an axle load above 8,000 kg, while caravans, trailers and coaches must stay on tar. You may not leave your car outside designated areas, drive off-road or drive at night: you must be inside a camp or out of a gate before it closes.

Gate times: the clock that runs your day

Entrance gates open at 05:30 from October to March and at 06:00 from April to September. All gates close at 18:30 from November to February, 18:00 in March, April and from August to October, and 17:30 from May to July (SANParks, 2026). Late entry is allowed only in an emergency, until 21:00, for guests booked at a camp within 10 km of the gate, and never at Phabeni, Phalaborwa or Pafuri.

Plan the arrival backwards from closing time. A northern camp can be two to four hours from the gate at park speeds, so arriving after about 14:00 in winter risks not reaching it by 17:30. The flight times on our flights page are set with this in mind.

Car hire at the airports and at Skukuza

SANParks lists car hire at KMIA, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa airports and at Skukuza camp, and from all major South African towns; it endorses Avis. This is how most international visitors do Kruger: fly to the park's edge, collect a car and drive in. Whether a rental contract allows gravel roads varies by company, so ask before you sign, because a large part of the park's road network is gravel.

Transfers, shuttles and open-vehicle trips

  • KMIA to the park: SANParks lists a private shuttle that takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. It publishes no fare.
  • Fly-in lodge guests at Skukuza stay airside in a transfer area and connect to light aircraft for their lodge, with bags tagged through from Johannesburg or Cape Town (Skukuza Airport).
  • Open safari vehicles: operators in Hazyview, Marloth Park and other towns run day and overnight trips into the park under SANParks permits. If you do not want to drive, this is the main alternative.
  • Park & Ride: SANParks lists community-run four-hour drives from Numbi, Phabeni and Paul Kruger gates, 07:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. No price appears in the tariff.

Can you reach Kruger by public transport?

Only as far as Mbombela. A coach aggregator listed seven operators on the Johannesburg to Mbombela route in October 2026, including Intercape, City to City and Translux, with about 18 departures a day, a fastest time of 3 hours 40 minutes and fares from about US$19. There is no public bus into the park and no passenger train. From Mbombela or Hazyview your options are a hire car, the KMIA shuttle, or an open-vehicle tour or coach tour, and coaches are restricted to tar roads inside the park.

Border crossings into Mozambique

Two posts link Kruger to Mozambique's Limpopo National Park, part of the same Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. Giriyondo, reached from Phalaborwa gate or from Letaba and Mopani, is open 08:00 to 15:00 from April to September and 08:00 to 16:00 from October to March. Flood damage closed it from January 2026; it reopened on 31 March 2026. Limpopo National Park says the road from Giriyondo to Massingir (70 km, about 2 hours) is passable by sedan, though an off-road vehicle is preferable, and that its other roads need high clearance or a 4x4, which is essential in the wet season. It also applies a compulsory overnight rule in one of the two parks or an approved lodge.

Pafuri, in the far north, is open 08:00 to 16:00 all year and needs high clearance or a 4x4 on the Mozambican side. The main tar route to Maputo uses the Lebombo post at Komatipoort, on the N4 near Crocodile Bridge gate, open 06:00 to 24:00 (longer at Easter and over the festive season). There is no border post from Kruger into Zimbabwe; Beitbridge on the N1 is outside the park. Check visa rules for Mozambique before you go.

Tolls, floods and what to check before you leave

The N4 from Pretoria through Mbombela to Komatipoort is a toll road with plazas at Diamond Hill, Middelburg, Machado and Nkomazi. The 2026 class 1 amounts we found disagreed between sources, so we do not print them here; take a bank card. Heavy rain in January 2026 cut roads, bridges and whole sections of the park, closed the northern gates and Orpen for a time, and led SANParks to apply gate quotas at Malelane, Numbi and Paul Kruger. Road status still changes week to week, so read the SANParks notifications page before you set out.

Something this page does not answer?

Routes and road conditions change faster than any page can. If yours does not fit what is written here, ask.

Ask us. We answer questions about the park itself, and we can usually tell you which camps work on one route and who to write to. If what you want is a trip someone else arranges, we will say so and hand you to an operator we know, and we earn a commission if that becomes a booking.

Nothing on this site sits behind the form. Every figure we have is already on the page.
