Where it is

Kruger covers 19,485 km² with nine entrance gates. Inside means one of three things here: a SANParks camp; a private lodge on a concession leased from SANParks; or a lodge on community land that is part of the park by contract (the Makuleke Contract Park in the far north, and the Nkambeni contractual land near Numbi Gate, where Nkambeni and Mdluli place themselves inside on their own sites). The private reserves to the west, the Sabi Sand, Manyeleti, Timbavati, Klaserie and Balule, are outside the national park and have their own guides. Staying outside a gate means paying the day conservation fee on every entry, and in holiday peaks SANParks applies gate quotas to day visitors; overnight guests with a booking go in first.

Lion Sands Narina Lodge

Top-end · Inside the park · Safari company

Lion Sands' adult lodge, run by the MORE Collection on the Kruger side of the Sabie River near Skukuza. Like Tinga, its place inside the park rests on industry convention and the group's concession company, since the lodge page says only Lion Sands Game Reserve. Nine treehouse-style suites stand on stilts, each with a private plunge pool, and only guests aged 16 and over may stay. The group's from-rate in 2026 was $1,953 per person sharing; Narina's own figure loads by script and could not be read on 6 October 2026. Choose it for a couple's stay on the river; families should look at Tinga.

Pafuri Camp

Mid-range · Inside the park · Ownership unconfirmed

RETURN Africa's main camp in the Makuleke Contract Park, the wedge between the Luvuvhu and Limpopo rivers in Kruger's far north. The operator says the land is the ancestral home of the Makuleke, forcibly removed under apartheid, who reclaimed it in 1998, and that it works in partnership with them. Nineteen tented suites on the Luvuvhu include family tents, and the booking form counts children from 3 to 17. Pafuri Camp reopened on 1 June 2026 after the floods. The operator says prophylaxis is recommended year-round, since Pafuri is in a malaria area. Choose it for the northern river country at a lower price than the Rare Earth lodges, if the quote confirms that.

SANParks calls the sandy riverbed an excellent place for game viewing, particularly elephant, and the camp holds one of the park's three staffed information centres and the Elephant Hall museum. The January 2026 floods hit Letaba hard: the campsite reopened on 6 July 2026, and SANParks expected 64 units back by 30 November 2026. Choose it as a mid-park base if your dates fall after the repairs; check SANParks' notifications before you book anything roofed. Owned and run by SANParks.

Talamati Bushveld Camp

Budget · Inside the park · Park-run

One of SANParks' five bushveld camps, in the central-west of the park. Its own camp page was not captured for this guide, so the location detail is thin; SANParks' bushveld rules say it is one of three where electrical equipment such as hair-dryers may be used, that it has communal freezers, and that only guests with a booking may enter. There is no shop or restaurant. SANParks lists sunset and night drives from Talamati. Cottages start at R1,870 a unit. It was closed after the January 2026 floods and its reopening was not confirmed by October 2026. Owned and run by SANParks.

Tsendze Rustic Camp Site

Budget · Inside the park · Park-run

SANParks' rustic campsite, about 7 km south of Mopani Rest Camp, with sites laid out in a rough figure of eight under old leadwood, mopane and apple-leaf trees. The Tsendze River and the Nshawu Creek run through the area. It is the only place to camp near Mopani, which has no campsite of its own and handles Tsendze's bookings and check-in. No rate appears on the reseller's list, so ask SANParks for a quote, and expect basic facilities: a secondary source says there is no electricity. Choose it if you want the north under canvas without the bustle of a main camp. Owned and run by SANParks.

Sable Sleepover Hide

Budget · Inside the park · Park-run

One of two SANParks sleepover hides, about 10 km from Phalaborwa Gate and overlooking Sable Dam. SANParks puts it plainly: a bird hide by day, it becomes a primitive overnight dwelling by night. Day visitors use it until the gates close, then it is yours. There is no water at all, for drinking or washing, and one light runs for about five hours on request. You bring bedding, food and water. The 2024/25 tariff priced a hide at R1,072 a night; ask SANParks for the current figure. Choose it for one unusual night near Phalaborwa; skip it if you want a bathroom. Owned and run by SANParks.

Mdluli Safari Lodge

Mid-range · Inside the park · Community or local

A 50-tent lodge on community land in the south-west of Kruger, reached by a signposted private road off the Numbi Gate road, not far from Pretoriuskop. It sells three packages, all with breakfast and dinner: self-drive, one drive added, or all meals with two drives a day. Children up to 6 stay and eat free, under-12s pay half. Choose it if you want to self-drive from a serviced tent; ask for the package rate, since none was published.

Hutwini Walking Camp

Mid-range · Inside the park · Ownership unconfirmed

One of two walking camps in RETURN Africa's Pafuri Collection, on the Luvuvhu River in the Makuleke Contract Park in Kruger's far north. The operator runs its walking safaris from April to October; in 2026 it billed the season as one of renewal after the floods. Capacity, rate and child policy were not published on the pages we read, so this entry is short: ask RETURN Africa for the details. The land belongs to the Makuleke, who reclaimed it in 1998. Choose it if a multi-day walk in the north is the point of your trip.

Good to know about staying here

Inside Kruger you sleep either in one of 27 SANParks units (rest camps, satellite and bushveld camps, bush lodges, two sleepover hides and a rustic campsite) or in one of 29 private lodges on concessions and community contract land. The bottom is a SANParks campsite at R399 to R424 per site for two from 1 November 2026 (about $12 to $13 each, reseller rates read 6 October 2026); the top is Singita Lebombo and Sweni at R51,665 per adult sharing in off-peak 2026 (about $3,103). The claim most often wrong is the word Kruger in a name: Kruger Park Lodge sits in Hazyview, the Kruger Gate Hotel stands outside Paul Kruger Gate, and the Lion Sands River and Ivory lodges are in the Sabi Sand, all outside the national park.

Two places inside the fence stand on land returned to its people. The Makuleke reclaimed the Pafuri area in the far north in 1998 and leased it back to conservation under a contractual park; RETURN Africa (Pafuri Camp, Baobab Hill House and two walking camps) works in partnership with the Makuleke, and Rare Earth Retreats runs The Outpost and Pel's Post on the same land. Near Numbi Gate, Nkambeni Safari Camp calls itself the brainchild of the Nkambeni community and is managed by AHA Hotels & Lodges, while Mdluli Safari Lodge tells a land-reform story of its own. In the SANParks camps, a 1% community fund is added to every accommodation and activity booking, and the community-run Park & Ride drives leave from the southern gates. On 29 May 2026 SANParks and the land-claimant communities signed a benefit-sharing agreement that promises shareholding and concessions.

Every price on this page is in US dollars.

Rates checked 6 October 2026 and converted at R16.65 to the US dollar (rate of that date); re-check before you book. SANParks does not print its unit rates online, so every SANParks figure here is a reseller rate from krugerpark.co.za (Siyabona Africa) for 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027, quoted per unit and shown per person for two sharing. Private lodge figures come from each lodge's own rate page unless the entry says reseller. The SANParks conservation fee is extra almost everywhere: R602 (about $36) per international adult per day until 31 October 2026, R692 (about $42) from 1 November 2026.

SANParks facilities come from SANParks' own camp pages, read through Wayback Machine captures from 2024 to 2026 because sanparks.org blocked automated reading; private lodge facilities come from each lodge's own site, read 6 October 2026. We record only what that page states. A blank means we could not check it, not that it is missing. Flood repairs in 2026 may have changed what is open at a camp.
