Four airports and the lodge airstrips

Flying to Kruger National Park: Skukuza, KMIA, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa

Four airports serve Kruger, and only one of them is inside the park. Skukuza takes Airlink jets from Johannesburg and Cape Town; Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMIA), Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa sit on the edge, each with car hire. Here is the air layer as the airlines' own pages showed it in October 2026.

If you only want the answer

Fly to Skukuza (SZK) if you are staying in the south: Airlink flies there from Johannesburg twice a day (4Z861 at 10:05 and 4Z865 at 13:05, one hour) and from Cape Town once a day (4Z651 at 10:30), on its own Skukuza timetable read in October 2026. For the central and northern park, fly to Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa; for the most routes (Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban), fly to KMIA near Mbombela. Pack to 20 kg checked: that is Airlink's economy limit, and Federal Airlines' lodge shuttles allow 20 kg including camera gear.

Which airport is closest to Kruger?

Skukuza Airport is the only one inside the park, next to Skukuza rest camp and the park headquarters, and it is the only one of Kruger's airfields with a scheduled airline. The other three are outside the boundary: Phalaborwa's Kruger Park Gateway Airport is 3 km from Phalaborwa gate, Hoedspruit Eastgate is 68 km from Orpen gate and 74 km from Phalaborwa gate, and KMIA lies between Mbombela and White River, 22 km from Mbombela and about 1 hour 20 minutes from the park by shuttle (SANParks).

Match the airport to your camps. Skukuza and KMIA serve the south (Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Pretoriuskop, Berg-en-Dal); Hoedspruit serves Orpen and Satara; Phalaborwa serves Letaba, Olifants and Mopani. SANParks lists car hire at KMIA, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa airports and at Skukuza camp itself.

Skukuza flights: the 2026 Airlink timetable

Airlink's Skukuza airport site printed this timetable when we read it on 6 October 2026, with every flight daily and no validity dates. It carries two Johannesburg rotations a day, one more than SANParks' own Kruger page showed in 2025, plus the Cape Town flight. SANParks' page still prints older times (a 10:00 departure from Johannesburg and 13:20 from Skukuza), so trust the airline.

Fares move with demand. Airlink's booking site showed Cape Town to Skukuza from ZAR 4,047 and Skukuza to Johannesburg from ZAR 2,857 one way in early October 2026, about US$243 and US$172 at R16.65 to the dollar. Treat those as the floor, not the fare you will pay in July.

Flights to KMIA, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa

SANParks says Airlink flies daily from Johannesburg to KMIA, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa, and daily from Cape Town and Durban to KMIA, with a Cape Town to Hoedspruit flight as well. The airlines load these timetables by script, and we could not read the 2026 departure times, so check them on the booking sites. FlySafair launched Cape Town to KMIA on 2 April 2024, twice a week with a Boeing 737-800, at 09:00 from Cape Town (arriving 11:30) and 12:05 back, from R1,851 one way at launch; its 2026 frequency is not published in a form we could read.

KMIA is the airport to price first if you are hiring a car anyway: it has the most routes, two airlines on the Cape Town leg, and Malelane gate is 64 km beyond Mbombela on the N4. Hoedspruit is the shortcut to the central park, and Phalaborwa puts you three kilometres from a gate.

Light aircraft to the lodges, and the park's own airstrips

Kruger has nine airfields, at Letaba, Mopani, Olifants, Pafuri, Punda Maria, Satara, Shingwedzi, Skukuza and Tshokwane, and SANParks' management plan says they are mainly for park operations. Only Skukuza has airline service; the Satara, Punda Maria and Pafuri strips are also used by concession lodges to drop and collect guests. No aircraft may enter the park's airspace or land without the park's permission, and private and charter flights into Skukuza need prior authorisation and an indemnity.

Federal Airlines runs shuttles from OR Tambo and KMIA to lodge airstrips around Kruger. It calls these shuttles, not scheduled flights, so times shift with bookings. The only fares we found are on a 2025 rate sheet for a Sabi Sand lodge: R9,500 per adult one way from Johannesburg (90 minutes, departures at 11:30 and 13:00), R7,400 per child aged 2 to 11, and R6,500 per adult for the hop from KMIA. No 2026 fares for the concession lodges inside Kruger are published; your lodge books and quotes the leg. Singita, for example, flies guests to the Satara airstrip in daylight only.

Baggage limits: 20 kg, and soft bags for the small planes

  • Airlink economy: 20 kg checked, 30 kg in business. Airlink's conditions of carriage are reported to allow 8 kg in the cabin.
  • Federal Airlines: 20 kg per person including photographic equipment, plus 5 kg hand luggage, largest piece 40 x 30 x 60 cm, soft bags with one flat side preferred. Excess must be booked ahead.
  • Federal Airlines stores extra luggage free at Johannesburg and Kruger for passengers booked on a return.
  • FlySafair: its baggage pages would not load for us; check the allowance on your booking.

Connecting through Johannesburg

OR Tambo in Johannesburg is the hub for almost every international arrival, and all four Kruger airports have flights from it. Most overnight long-haul flights land early in the morning, which leaves time for the 10:05 to Skukuza on the same day; that is our planning note, not an airline promise. On the way home, Federal Airlines advises at least two hours between a shuttle's arrival at Johannesburg and a domestic departure, and three hours before an international one.

Mind the park clock too. Gates close as early as 17:30 from May to July, and lodges that collect guests by road must reach camp before then, which is why Jock Safari Lodge publishes recommended flight times for KMIA. If your Skukuza flight lands at 14:05 and you are self-driving to a northern camp, you may not make it before the gate shuts; stay near Skukuza on the first night instead.

Fly or drive?

  • Fly to Skukuza if you are staying in the south or at a concession lodge that collects from the airport, and want to be watching game by lunchtime.
  • Fly to KMIA, Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa and hire a car if you plan to self-drive between several camps; SANParks lists car hire at Skukuza camp too.
  • Drive from Johannesburg if you have the time and want the lowest cost: 428 km to Malelane gate, 4 to 5 hours, all on tar.
  • Fly in by light aircraft only if your lodge arranges it; there is no scheduled service to Kruger's other airstrips.

Something this page does not answer?

Schedules change by season and the edge airports publish little. If the dates you want are not covered, ask.

Ask us. We answer questions about the park itself, and we can usually tell you which camps work on one route and who to write to. If what you want is a trip someone else arranges, we will say so and hand you to an operator we know, and we earn a commission if that becomes a booking.

Nothing on this site sits behind the form. Every figure we have is already on the page.
