Month by month

Kruger in May

May is the month the guidebooks undersell. The rains are over, the pans are drying, the school holidays are weeks away, and the top lodges charge shoulder rates for what is already very good game viewing.

If you only want the answer

May is one of the best-value months in Kruger. Expect about 13 mm of rain at the park centre, highs of 26.5°C and model nights of 15.1°C that feel colder at dawn. Game starts to concentrate on the rivers, wild dogs begin denning, and there are no school holidays. Gates now close at 17:30, the earliest of the year.

May weather: the first cold mornings

The normals give May about 13 mm of rain at the park centre, usually on a single day, with afternoons of 26.5°C and nights of 15.1°C. The model is mild about nights, and the cold arrives at dawn first: bring a warm layer for any drive that leaves before sunrise. Skukuza averages three rainy days in May, the last real showers of the year.

As the pans dry up, game starts to concentrate on the rivers and permanent dams. The grass is still taller than in winter, but the bush is thinning.

Wild dog denning and the fire season

Wild dogs typically den from May to July, according to the sighting logs of the Singita concession east of Satara. A denning pack stays in one area for a few weeks, which is the best chance of the year to see this endangered species. Kruger's 2022 count was about 250 dogs, so luck still decides it.

May also opens the fire season, which SANParks gives as May to October. The park manages it with patch burns, so you may drive past blackened ground or smoke. From 1 May all gates close at 17:30, the earliest closing time of the year, and stay that way until the end of July.

Rates and malaria in May

May has no school holidays, and the top lodges are on shoulder rates: Singita Lebombo charges R56,310 per adult from 1 to 31 May, between its off-peak and peak prices. Jock Safari Lodge moves to its high-season rate of R18,480 on 1 May 2026. Kruger Untamed's two seasonal tented camps open on 1 May (their next season runs from 1 May to 30 September 2027).

May is the last month of the malaria transmission season by NaTHNaC's definition, so tablets are still recommended. From June to August NaTHNaC rates the risk as very low.
