Month by month
Kruger in June
June is when Kruger's dry season gets serious. The bush thins, the animals walk to the rivers, and the coldest dawns of the year arrive, much colder than any climate table suggests.
If you only want the answer
June is prime time for game. Expect about 6 mm of rain at the park centre, highs of 24.5°C and a model night low of 12.5°C, but real dawns in the south of 5 to 8°C and occasional frost. Large buffalo herds gather at water, malaria risk falls to very low, and the top lodges switch to peak rates on 1 June. The winter school holidays start at the end of the month.
June weather: dress for frost, not for the table
The model gives June about 6 mm of rain at the park centre, highs of 24.5°C and nights of 12.5°C. The daytime figure is right; the night figure is not. The Skukuza weather station recorded -4.4°C in June, the lowest reading between 1960 and 2001, and its July mean minimum is about 6°C. On an open vehicle before sunrise, dress for 5 to 8°C in the south and colder in low-lying spots, with a hat and gloves.
SANParks itself warns that night drives in the dry season need warm clothing. By mid-morning the cold is forgotten: June afternoons are the most comfortable of the year for driving.
Game at the water: the dry season sets in
Singita's June 2025 sighting log described a drier, more open environment with clearer views as the vegetation thins, and water scarcity drawing wildlife to permanent water. It logged buffalo herds of more than 1,000. Wild dogs are still denning, which they typically do from May to July.
Patch burns continue through the dry season, so expect some burnt ground. All gates open at 06:00 and close at 17:30, giving a short driving day: arriving at a gate after about 14:00 risks not reaching a northern camp in time.
Rates, holidays and malaria in June
Singita Lebombo moves to its peak rate of R60,470 per adult on 1 June, and Lukimbi Safari Lodge to its high season (R16,300) on 16 June. In the far north, Pafuri Camp reopened on 1 June 2026 after the floods. The winter school holidays begin at the end of the month (29 June in 2026, 28 June in 2027), and the southern camps fill.
NaTHNaC rates the malaria risk in Kruger as very low from June to August and advises bite avoidance only, without tablets.
